The Western Riders are the main group on the highline scene in Portugal.

With epic projects and the creation of new high-line routes, as the crazy slackline in Nazaré, they always bring spectacular images of highlining and portuguese landscapes.

united for the purpose of promoting slackline and the potential of Portugal for this sport, we began to work together during 2018.

Who are the Western Riders?

We are a Highliners team composed of two Portuguese, José Ferreira and Pedro Domingos, and one Brazilian, Emerson Machado.

What is the biggest motivation for what you do?

In addition to the fun, the search for new challenges, the dissemination of highline in Portugal and Portugal as a destination of choice for highliners. For this we document each trip with photos and videos, creating content for this purpose. It was with the will of centralizing the publication of this material that, in early 2017, lead us to found the Western Riders team.

What brought you the creation of the team?

It was a very important step and made our work even more serious, which motivated us in the search for new lines and new challenges. Some of our photos and videos have been published in various media in the world, which facilitated access to information and contacts on the slackline community from around the world that, from time to time, come here to visit us, to know and to practice highline in the places where we usually do.

Why the name Western Riders?

The name Western Riders comes from the classic line we have at Cabo da Roca, and because it is a line that inspires us so much and where all this history began, we gave the same name to the team.

What were your biggest projects?

Certainly the two major projects carried out and known worldwide were the Nazaré line with the giant waves and the Crossing Borders project, where we established the first highline, in the world, connecting two countries, Portugal and Spain. This highline in Miranda do Douro and is 281 meters long.

What are the projects for the future?

For the future we want to explore the Azorean islands, bringing the highline beyond the continental area. The Azores is undoubtedly the perfect place to be explored, enjoyed and later well promoted.
